Twitter to expand 280-character tweets
Twitter plans to increase the number of characters in tweets from 140 to 280 for the majority of users. The new limit will not apply to tweets written in Japanese, Chinese and Korean which can convey more information in a single character. During the test, only 5% of tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only 2% more than 190, the social media site said in a blog post. "We saw when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they tweeted more easily and more often. But importantly, people tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained." According to Twitter, 9% of tweets in English hit the character limits.
